ISLAMIC FEMINISM

Definition

Islamic feminism is a form of feminism that seeks to achieve full equality for all Muslims, both men and women, in public and private life, while grounding its arguments in Islamic principles. It challenges patriarchal interpretations of Islam, emphasizing the Quran's teachings on equality and women's rights, while also engaging with broader feminist discourses

History

In the past 150 years or so, many scholarly interpretations have developed from within the Islamic tradition itself that seek to redress social wrongs perpetrated against Muslim women.[26] For example, new Islamic jurisprudence is emerging that seeks to forbid practices like female genital mutilation, equalize family law, support women as clergy and in administrative positions in mosques, and supports equal opportunities for Muslim women to become judges in civil as well as religious institutions.[26] Modern feminist Islamic scholars perceive their work as restoration of rights provided by God and Muhammad but denied by society.[26]

founder

Whilst writers like Fatima Mernissi, Nawal Al Saadawi and Huda Sha'arawi could be described as the founders of Feminism in the Arab world, The Feminist Project in Islam as coined by Mir-Hosseini (2011) started to gather pace and momentum in the late 1980s and early 1990s in the Arab and Muslim worlds.

the concept of Islamic feminism

Islamic feminism is a form of feminism concerned with the role of women in Islam. It aims for the full equality of all Muslims, regardless of gender, in public and private life. Islamic feminists advocate for women's rights, gender equality, and social justice grounded in an Islamic framework

Islam and feminism compatible

The Quran states explicitly that men and women are equal before God. During the seventh century, women could own businesses and fight battles. Muslim feminists throughout the world today are advocating a return to Prophet Muhammad's vision of an egalitarian religion for an equal society.

Can a feminist wear a hijab?

Yes, a woman can be feminist and wear hijab out of her free will.

Islam appreciates the woman's femininity

Woman is an integral part of man because of her femininity, just as he is an integral part of her. The man and woman are neither opponents nor rivals. Rather, they help each other to attain perfection with regard to their personality and gender

International conferences on Islamic feminism

Few international conferences on Islamic feminism have taken place. One international congress on Islamic feminism was held in Barcelona, Spain in 2008.[65] Musawah ('equality'; in Arabic: Ù…ساواة) is a global movement for equality and justice in the Muslim family, led by feminists since 2009, "seeking to reclaim Islam and the Koran for themselves".[66]

Musawah movement operates on the principle that patriarchy within Muslim countries is a result of the way male interpreters have read Islamic texts,[66] and that feminists can progressively interpret the Quran to achieve the goal of international human rights standards.[66] The first female Muslim 'ulema congress was held in Indonesia in 2017.[67] The women ulema congress issued a fatwa to lift the minimum age for girls to marry to 18.[67] Malaysian feminist Zainah Anwar informed the congress that women have an equal right to define Islam and that women need to fight against male domination in Quranic interpretations.[67] During the congress, Nur Rofiah, a professor in Quranic studies, stated that, Islam asks every human being to elevate the status of humankind, and polygamy does not, and that polygamy is not the teaching of Islam[67]

Dark Feminism

The Dawn of the Dark Feminine in Islam encourages embracing Islam as a 'dark' religion. Islam belongs to the realm of The Dark, the primordial feminine aspect of God. The Dark is the other eye of God alongside the Light, across a face of a great divinity that is nebulous and unknowable.

Western And Islamic Feminism

In western capitalist countries, woman’s dignity has been compromised and she has been reduced to a commodity to be exploited. Her semi-naked postures and her sexuality are exploited commercially and unabashedly. It is totally against the concept of woman’s honor and dignity. Unfortunately, many western feminists do not consider this objectionable but accept it as part of women’s freedom. Some (though not as many) even advocate prostitution as a woman’s right to earn a living.

This is against the concept of Islamic feminism, which while sanctioning sexual gratification to be as much of a woman’s basic right as a man’s prohibits extramarital sexual liaison. This, on one hand, upholds a woman’s honor and dignity, and on the other, exalts marital relations to the level of sanctity, restricting it for procreation. Islamic feminists have to observe certain norms which western feminists are not obliged to.
